Is Image Important to Music?

Does Keith Emerson seem more impressive with his Moog...

... than with a laptop running a soft synth?

Does he fail to impress eitherway!? :)

I think it's better with just the laptop, but that's just me anyway :p

The laptop one makes Keith Emerson look hip.

I think the effect occurs only if there is no music! In the photos the moog makes diference because there is silence. Once music is added, image loses all of its importance. Even more when we are talking about Keith Emerson.

Thanks for your comment João. I still find myself disagreeing with the sentiment though.

While music doesn't need image to be enjoyed, saying that a live concert is all about the music just doesn't sit right with me. If that were the case, why have any type of theatrics at all so? You could easily do away with the elaborate lighting and opt for a simple spot light instead, just for illumination. Exchange the fancy sequent suits for a plain old tracksuit. Emerson could keep his knives under his bed at home and he certainly wouldn't need his pyrotechnics ribbon controller, thats for sure! :)

When you go up on stage you become more than a musician, you become a performer, and performance encompasses more than just music.
