I have no real views on Saddam Hussein. I think the execution, right or wrong, was far too rushed. Is Iraq any better off without him? Probably not. Saddam brought corrupt order. With him gone, its still corrupt but now in complete disorder. I know I'd rather live in a country afraid of a man living in a big gold house somewhere else, than being afraid of my neighber killing me.

I just hope the person who made the video was deliberately being ironic.

Well, I've just seen the video, and it's a very crude affair, obviously filmed on a mobile phone, but it does show the hanging. It is such a dark room too and that doesn't help. Careful use of the still frame features towards the end clearly show that the hanging "worked" very well and was very quick.
I am sure in the days to come, the official film will get "out there".
As much as he was an evil tyrant who was guilty of some heinous crimes, I'm not sure hanging him was the best way to deal with him. I understand it's a different culture and this is their way of dealing with it.
One thing bugs me though. He was tried and convicted of the murder of about 150 of his own people and some other acts as well. In their war on Iraq that is allegedly about weapons of mass destruction & a war on terror (neither of which existed in Iraq) but was actually about regime change (which is illegal), George Bush and Tony Blair are responsible for the deaths of many thousands, some say nearly 3/4 million, people, the vast majority of which were innocent civilians.
I wonder, do you think Bush or Blair would get hung ? I mean, in comparison to Hussein, Bush & Blair are the Man Utd of killing people, Hussein was merely Acrington Stanley !
Sure, Hussein gassed the Iranians and the Kurds, but it was us that gave him the chemicals in the forst place. Sure, he murdered and tortured thousands of his own people, but we gave him that ability and turned a blind eye because we believed that he served a purpose by keeping Iran at bay.
We created Saddam Hussein, we used him and then when he overstepped the mark we had laid down by invading Kuwait and trying to get his hands on the oil that was more rightfully his than the US, we did something about him. When he was about to take a precious assest we all of a sudden have a conscience. Never mind that the cunt had murdered people in a most horrible way, but heaven forbid he tries to take our oil !
In my personal opinion, the world would be a safer place today if it was George W Bush swinging on the end of a rope yesterday morning rather than an old, tired and ineffectual dictator.
Ah well, we will reap what we sow.
Thing is, I keep saying "we", but the majority of us wanted no part of this, yet we will suffer the consequences for many years to come.
Hey you should think about putting these long comments up on your own blog, like you used to before you went music only! It's a shame that you spend so much time writing a long piece and it only ends up hidden away on the tail end of one of my posts.
Maybe I'll start another blog, just my rants and raves ! ;o)
