This photo was taken with a Sony Mavica FD-7. What a horrid digital camera! It was the first digital camera I owned; I got it when it came out in the late 90's. I was attracted by the lens and storage medium. I like this image because its hard to make out whats going on.

A few of the images are from scans of prints using an old flatbed scanner, which has a fairly limited bit-dept.

I was going through some old files and couldn't find the original version so I set about trying to recreate the same effect. I'm not really into digital manipulation as an art form, but I do like the results I get from this specific but simple technique I discovered some years back. The technique is probably very common though. I also had a few images similar to the hand imagine above but like the swan photo, they too went missing, so I created the one above tonight.

Image hosting by Photobucket
The only alteration I made to the technique this time was to add a duplicate layer to the image with a medium Gaussian blur applied and then set it to screen, which brought out the plumage highlights along the swans wing. For the image below, I shifted the hue map slightly to give a less dramatic effect. Oh and I dodged a little around the swans eye to give it a bit more definition.

Changes

Just made another change to the template for this place. Green seems to be fairly neutral, it makes the posts and pictures stands out, plus its easy on the eyes. Using my one of my own photos for the banner. You have to love the richness of Fuji Velvia really dont you, even if it is a pain to get scanned!

I also changed the blogs description to "hyperdimensional". I originally wanted "hyperfaceted" but apparently its trade marked!

Pirates

Image hosting by Photobucket
Ich liebe Deutschland, arrr!

The obsession with pirates is quite strange. "I'm a pirate; arrr!" and so on. Pirates were not nice people! They weren't lovable rascals, they were dangerous disease ridden nasty vile men (smelly too!) It made me think, would Hitler be seen in a better light if he were a pirate, swashbuckling his way across eastern europe. In 300 years time are we going to have people dressing up as scum bags in tracksuits sporting a hypodermic syringe uttering "I'm a junkie, giv'us your money or I'll jab ya! arrr!".

Warren Fu does a great Jack Sparrow

You can't blame Johnny Depp either, or even Kevin Kline in The Pirates of Penzance, (which was far superior to that Pirates of the Caribbean rubbish!) Pirates have been a favorite of people for a long time. Getting back to The Pirates of the Caribbean though, Johnny Depp needs to get more credit for roles other than Jack Sparrow, which left me cold and unamused. Whats the big deal with his performance of Jack Sparrow? Great, a drunk pirate! When is he going to play Freddie Mercury thats what I want to know!

Hey don't worry, I'm a pirate too, "Mad Morty Vane" to be exact. Actually, people who know me would say that the above description is fairly accurate :)

On reflection

I've been giving the Muse Absolution Tour DVD a few reruns over the weekend. Forget what I said about it being lukewarm... its supurb! It lacks the drama of Hullaballoo but musically its great! Encore is still crap though!

Nutcracker - Wed 09.11.05

Image hosted by Photobucket.comI went to see the “Nutcracker and Divertissements” preformed by Cork City Ballet in the Opera House on Wednesday the 9th of November last year. I didn’t think I’d like it all that much (I dislike the thought of pop-ballet) but in fairness it was very enjoyable. I went with my sister at the last moment. I had this spare “magic” ticket you see. I wont go into the details but I will say it caused nothing but trouble in its short existence :) So anyway, we went, we saw, we bought the DVD. I’ll comment on this DVD later on. Before that though I’ll just finish up on some points about the show. The divertissements were nice, not just filler. Even the dreaded Paddy Casey number seemed to flow nicely. There was the occasional wobble from one of the danseurs (he’ll remain nameless) but other than that the performers seemed capable. My favourite moments of the evening came from the performances from the Don Quixote extracts. Superb dancing and some fabulous costumes on the principles. A great night again, even if I did get TB from the people sitting around me!

"The Magic of Ballet: With Alan Foley and Monica Loughman" is the title of the DVD we brought home. Its hard to describe, not exactly designed for ballet tuition or giving an overview to ballet in general; I suppose you’d call it an introduction video based around Alan and Monica’s involvement in Cork Ballet. You see clips of Monica and Alan practising and performing on stage as well as some behind the scenes footage in Cork Opera House. The footage of the two practising is very nice but I’m not sure why we had to see Alan Foley drinking a bottle of water every 5 minutes and why he had such tatty sweatpants on.

Misha Gordin - Photographer

I’m using an "iframe" above to display a webpage from Misha Gordin’s website, use the scrollbar for navigation. I’m doing this partly for visual impact, partly to evade copyright law (I’m not reproducing his work but rather just “porting” it, but when did I start worrying about copyright anyway :-) and partly just to see what the iframe will look like here :)

Misha Gordin is perhaps my favorite photographer. Certainly his photographs aren’t for everyone, but one must admit to his technical prowess if nothing else. It is astonishing to look at his work and be aware that they were created without the use of digital manipulation. He only works within the bounds of a traditional darkroom.

His work reminds me that photography is still an art form and not just an instrument to freeze time. Certainly it is that but one can become so disheartened within this age of widespread digital photography and high speed internet. Why should I rummage around in a box of my own photography for a picture I took of the Dolomites while on holidays in Italy when I can just google “Dolomites” and have a picture pop up there and then. Everyone is out photographing everything nowadays; pirated copies of Adobe Photoshop mean an influx in “graphic artists”; but most importantly, they are publishing their work on the internet. It’s becoming so hard to take a photograph now without asking oneself, isn’t this just a cliché? Haven’t I seen this somewhere before? Its becoming harder to feel original, and sometimes feeling original is all we have.

Alpine Skiing

I used to be a big fan of alpine skiing. When I say used to be I suppose I could say still am, it isnt like I stopped liking it or anything but I kinda lost touch with it when circumstances meant that I could no longer watch it easily(lack of satilite TV). Myself and a friend even started building a web site dedicated to the German team years ago. It never saw the light of day but heres a pic of the home page now anyway.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
My sister helped me out with writing a letter to Martina Ertl asking for an autograph (her German being better than mine :-). It was so exciting getting the autographed postcard, I tell you. Its framed and proudly hung on a wall in my home.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Forgive the image quality, it was framed using non reflective glass (kinda bumpy on the surface) and its only a snap with my camera phone (as with a lot of pictures here lol).

Found this among some old links

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
I found this link to a webshots cat album, amoung a collection of old IE Favorites on a cd I made years ago. Aww isn't it so cute :)

First off, this is a swf file, you can see a larger version in a seperate window here!

This drawing came about late last evening. I was listening to Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds and did a random search for Phil Lynott. I was amazed to find a link to an announced movie of his life! I see Gary Dourdan of CSI fame is given credit as playing Phil Lynott. Whether he'll actually end up as the actor when (if) the movie goes into production is another thing.

So anyway that lead to "Phil Lynott: Tripod Slayer" somehow!? lol

Google Video - Ballet

Had a look at Google Video for the first time in a while yesterday. They added some new features to it, like supplying easy html to embed the video into ones website, very nice! :) So I'm trying it out. Searching for "ballet" yeilds way more interesting results than it did a while back too. I put up this clip I found of a ballerina performing 32 fouettes (in what looks like some kind of gala thing). I'm using it cos its short.

For the curious, an explaination of the significance of performing 32 fouettes can be found here, or just read on! :)

Swan Lake is one of the more technically demanding ballets, due in part to a remarkable Italian ballerina by the name of Pierina Legnani. When Legnani danced the central dual role of Odette/Odile, she brought to it the ability to perform 32 fouettes in a row. The public was so impressed that from that production on, any ballerina who danced the role had to perform the 32 fouettes. Legnani's name is still cursed by ballerinas the world over.

A fouette is a fast whipping turn on one foot. As you can appreciate it, it's very difficult to stay in place while doing this. But ballerinas don't just hate the 32 fouettes because they're technically demanding. They also resent them because they are, in essence, "a circus piece " In other words, they're strictly for effect; movements with no psychological motivation behind them. And for a ballet like Swan Lake to be a fulfilling experience, the movements have to reveal character; they have to have reason.

Mary Black

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
I cant believe I only heard about this last night! I also can’t believe people are defending her. This is a typical example where a quick apology would have smoothed everything out; “you’re absolutely right, it was was an awful thing to say, Im sorry” or whatever and then stick whatever schlock you want after that, like “its an old saying to do with working as hard as the blacksmiths in the west of Ireland”. Someone actually gave that as an excuse for her lol

What really stunned me though were her further comments on Radio. I just copy and pasted the following from a related post on Richard Delevan's sicNotes blog. A fantastic read by the way, I wholeheartedly recommend its viewing.

Orla then reads out another text from a listener that makes comparisons to the way Paddies and Micks were treated in the UK and elsewhere. The listener says that she's black and she's offended by O'Rourke's remarks.

Asked for her response, O'Rourke says: "Good for her. She’s got clearly her asylum...or her papers. I wish all asylum seekers could work here."

Oops. Second mistake. In case you missed what it was--O'Rourke's first reactions when told that a black person in Ireland is offended are 1) to patronise the black person and 2) assume that the black listener is an asylum seeker.

Oh man, what a moron! Nearly 70 years on the planet, umpteen years in the Dáil and still manages to make herself look like a fuckwit! People made a big deal out of George Bush’s “crusade” comments after 9/11 but all this “smokes him out of his hole” and then some! I just noticed that its made its way on to www.wikipedia.com now also!

In January 2006 O'Rourke received the party nomination to stand in the next general election. She narrowly beat her nearest rival and caused a minor controversy when she described her political team as "working like blacks."

When I heard that Michael “tá mé uafásach” D. Higgins was defending her I was bewildered. I’m bewildered why I get so shocked when hearing things like this about Irish politicians, but I digress. I thought to myself, is this the same Micky D that slammed Kevin Myers over his [technically correct] “Bastard” labeling of children of unmarried mothers. Others have made this comment also.

To be honest, nobody should be playing the racism card. We all know that its an old expression that people use, it shouldn’t have been used in a political acceptance speech but it was just a slip of the tongue. More importantly people should instead, concentrate on her attitude after her remarks. Politicians are meant to be hip, switched on, in touch with the general world view. At the very least they should be aware of attitudes within this millennium. Of course maybe she is! Judging by the general acceptance of her comments within the Irish public, maybe she’s right and I’m wrong.

Riemanns Cut

I decided to make this blog public at last. I thought I might as well. Its a year old already; pleanty of past goodies to get your teeth sunk into!

Evil pundit of doom!: Pictures Archives

I just found this page when doing a google image search for corn (dont ask why). Its a page of very funny (lots of cat orientated) photoshopped images. Absolutely love the Michael Moore ones :-)

Banner

When I took down the Christmas banner I felt like keeping one up there. Wasnt sure what so I just put up a link to a nice picture of a cat I found on google :-)

The Colonel

KFC isn't very nice, PETA don't need to give me a bucket of blood and bones for me to realise that, a genuine bucket of KFC would have done!

Still though, the bucket is handy for things.

Little Christmas

Happy Christmas for Little Ladies! I will be removing my sole decoration from this blog later. That being this:

The Producers (2005)

Isn’t it something when a movie actually parodies itself. You know, life imitating art and all that stuff. The Producers was such a movie. Never before have I seen such a movie bomb before my eyes within a cinema. I admit I’m not a big cinema goer, maybe only going five or so times in the last few months, but never have I seen a person walk out in disgust. Then came last night; I get to a see a bounty of mutineers, ten in total! Two groups of three and two couples. I was a bit tempted in the first quarter of the film to walk out too! And anyone who stayed were rolling around in their seats in agony from the ciemamatic torture they were being exposed to.

I admit I frown upon remakes, especially of films I like but I do try and be open minded.Lets get things straight first though, this wasnt a remake, oh no, its a totally new movie because its got "musical movie" tagged onto the end of its title... so obviously it has nothing to due with the original. Second, one of the very few positives about the film was that if I was actually watching it on stage I might have really enjoyed it, but after that things go downhill, fast!

The choice of actors was fine, their acting was what stunk. Nathan Lane was an acceptable look-alike but poor imitation of Zero Mostel. Uma Thurman was ok, if annoying can be classed as ok. Will Ferrell was acceptable but lacked the savagery of the original Liebkind. There were a few gimmicky stage props used in the film, totally unrealistic, plastic and cardboardy, but enough about Matthew Broderick. Seriously though, he was awful, awful to a point of being painful to watch. He could have failed the audition for Neo in the Matrix with that kind of acting (considering the acting “ability” of Keanu Reeves, that’s quite an insult). 'Hitler' the very fake pigeon acted with more conviction. I couldnt stomach his "Act like Gene Wilder in 10 easy steps" portrayal of Bloom. Wilder actually seemed to be in hysterics in the original, probably improvising with each take whereas Broderick seemed to be giving some watered down over rehearsed schlock he could repeat verbatim on every night on stage... Im being far to kind... he was shit!

Again this movie parodies itself when it comes to being offensive. The whole gay stereotype joke came and went with the “blue oyster bar” in Police Academy, get over the YMCA thing please! Did every gay stereotype have to be given a character, and why was the director made so obviously gay anyway. The original was funny because it let the viewer accept that he was a bit fruity, without having to have a bevy of homo’s screaming “Make it gay!”. His entrance in this was pretty dismal too when compared to the progressive reveal in the original. In fact all the deliveries of jokes within this movie were dismal. The concept of timing seems to be something that was left out in this film. "its funny no matter how or when you say it", thats the attitude. And, the length of a joke doesnt matter either apparently. The ‘springtime’ parts were too long and flopped, they needed to be as tight as the originals. One thing about this version though, it does feel like the Nazis are being made a fool of throughout, something that the original failed in and tempted to actually glorify the party at times! Having a gay rather than beatnik Hitler certainly help in the overall effect of mocking “Der Fuehrer”.

One last thing, I imagine the DVD release will be in 4:3 format as the actors rarely left the center of the screen. I couldn’t be bothered wasting more time on this, it was awful, and at least 10 other people agree with me.

Anekdoten - From Within

Been listening to ‘From Within’ by Swedish band Anekdoten recently. I had it a while but it never really got played due to the speed at which I acquire new music. So I’m listening to it wondering why I have it… was it recommended by a Magma fan or by just a prog fan or was it just one of those random albums you see that ppl list on Amazon? Eitherway, I can say for sure that Im definitely enjoying it! Reading up on them I hear others saying that their earlier albums were King Crimson influenced. I can’t comment on those but this album, for me anyway, has definitely got a Zeuhl thing going on. Just a hint of ‘De Futura’ within the bass and drumming within some of the tracks. Upon first listening I was instantly thinking Muse with the overall phrasing within the pieces and the singer likes to wail a bit (Yes Radiohead fanboys, he obviously must be stealing Thom Yorks genius too!) but this aint Muse :) Muse like to think they are all dark and depressing but they don’t know the meaning of it, they are far too clean cut! In fact when listening to the third track ‘Groundbound’, my mind started imagining a melding of Muse’s ‘Thoughts of a Dying Atheist’ to Magma’s ‘De Futura’, and then playing the said Muse track for reference my ears were nearly blasted off me! It was so crisp and clean, not like the smog covered fuzzations of Anekdoten! Its got its doom-metal stomping fuzz feeling to it as well you see.

The way I’d categorise the album, for myself anyway, is like this: a very serious Muse playing some Zeuhl stylised stuff with Orange Goblin covering its production while Sigur Ros play next door, just for flavour ;-) The one thing that’s a bit off putting about the album is the singer though. I feel his voice would be stronger if he sang in his native tongue rather than English (whoopsie if that is English :-)

If you want to hear examples of music from the album, they can be found on this page on the Anekdoten website. Bad news is the two tracks featured wont give you the same Muse vibe I was getting, well maybe a little bit, however the good news is very good :-) They are full tracks, allbeit at low quality and the Muse/Magma track is there 'groundbound'. The magic happens at exactly 3 minutes into the song. Deffinately give that one a listen, just to confirm how mad I am! :-)

Two thumbs up!

[ok, just before posting this I found out a few things… The bassist is also a member, of all things, a Thin Lizzy tribute band! More interestingly, one of his favourite bass players is Bernard Paganotti (Magma bassist) and lists Magma’s Hhai(Live) in his top ten albums; “but of course!” (said in best Tommy Teirnan accent!).

He might like Bernard Paganotti but he looks more like Jannik Top! lol

Oh my, I just downloaded their version of ‘Rosalie’ and ‘jailbreak’ from here… remember what I said about him singing in English before, yeah its emm… well its ‘interesting’! He’s not quite got the Dublin accent nailed down yet, that’s the kindest thing I can say lol :-) good fun though! ]

New Year Resolution

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
So heres the first new years resolution I made: get rid Norton! Oh man it actually felt good uninstalling it! I always had a disinterest in switching to a better anti-virus software suite, I felt like: “sure its crap, but I feel safer with it than switching to someone else who could turn out to be worse and letting my pc get a severe bout of electronic-gonorrhoea.” What broke the camels back however, was yesterday when trying to download the free version of Sygate Personal firewall (for use on a secondary PC), I was horrified to see that Sygate Firewall was recently acquired by Symantec (owners of Norton) and have discontinued the free firewall. I had the Symantec internet security suite, which had its own type of firewall thing, already installed on my new PC … horrid shite it was! I immediately disabled it and went straight for Sygate. If Symantec now own Sygate its bye-bye good firewall time. I heard good mumblings about ez-antivirus from CA (partnered with Microsoft so you know it must be ‘good’… emm moving swiftly along). Another major reason I went for it is the fact that theres a free year trial with it, including a years worth of updates! I installed it, fired it up and instantly felt better about things. Its got a a very nice simple interface and most refreshingly, its just anti-virus software… all bells and whistles are gone. Time will tell if its up to scratch however, but I can say that it spotted beasties which Norton had failed to so, so far so good! :-)

Very Amusing Review of Magma and Jannik Top

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
I found this review when looking up information on Jannik Top (above, who used to be bass player with Magma). The whole piece is fairly light hearted and amusing to read but it does drag on a bit in the last quarter. Its whats written about Jannik Top that had me in stitches though:

"Secondly, gone was the first bass player and gone with him was the jazz - replaced by the scariest and greatest shaved-bald middle-European Ur-Human of all-time. And with the greatest name-of-all-time, too: Jannik Top.

Jannik Top! I’m shaking in me booties just thinking ‘bout him. Jannik Top was a Gene Simmons for people with their own IQ. He played the bass like a Tyrannosaurus Rex skinning a Stegosaurus. He was at least eight feet tall and had claws instead of hands. His bass sound made the night fall early, and kept the moon from rising at all."

The last line made me burst out laughing :) ....

"He didn’t have amplifiers, he just plugged straight into the National Grid and drained the neighbourhood."
