Irish Roads are shit, but why?

See the above car, its just a Golf, a 3.2l Golf R32 but a Golf nonetheless. I saw a 07 one parked in the middle of the city last night while out clubbing, thats one hell of a brave owner. Anyway, theres a bit of a hullabaloo in Britain at the moment because their car taxation system is in for a state of change and owners of bigger engined cars are going to be hit. They are going to be charged an unimaginable price of €590 a year to tax a new car like the one above. Thats a considerable rise from the previous €295 cost to tax the car alright, the poor bastards I hear you say?

Whist now, just hold your break-horses for a second, I havent mentioned Irish taxes yet. Lets look at what us cretins have been paying Bertie and the boys for years. What would €295 get you in Ireland? Well, you could just about scrape a 1.4 polo like I used to or you could be very exotic and drive around in a 1.4l Golf GT like I am now. Thats what €300 will roughly get you, 1.4l sewing machines! To tax the above car in Ireland for a year will cost you, wait for it, €1,343! For British readers thats £910. But don't faint just yet, I havent mentioned VRT and believe me, when you read this you will faint. VRT on the above car is €11,902. Thats nearly 12 grand (excluding normal VAT) that goes straight to the government for no good reason.

I just have one question: wheres the fucking money gone!? They havent spent it on roads thats for sure. Why do we need to be charged so much? Don't give me any bollocks about smaller populations, since we have a much smaller land mass than Britain so therefore need less to keep the roads going. Just where is the money leaking to? Pockets? Brown envelopes? Mary Harneys daily dietry needs? I know shes a big bitch but come on, 12 grand is a lot of burgers even for her, but then again...

That's a pretty car. How much does would that cost in Ireland?

I believe that Ireland is the only country where the Gov. double tax the cars...or am i wrong?

Well the R32, depending on spec, will set you back anywhere from €48k to €52k, and remember that includes the €12k VRT tax robbery.

There are a few countries that charge VRT but nothing like Ireland. You want to skip VRT? Buy a comercial van... VRT on that is only €50.

You can find out more about the Golf here: Golf R32 Overview

To comment on two posts – the one from March 19th and this one. Your stance is sexist if not verging on misogyny. I have not seen a fat tennis player yet :) Definitely no one would say so about Ms Williams. It is good (luck) she is not the terrible size “0” either. In the long term that does not really matter though. Just as it does not matter what size Mary Harney is. Some people should watch their weight just as they should watch their words. When it comes to politicians though, as a voter judge their words and actions where they are relevant. If you want to judge anything else ... maybe look in the mirror first.

By the way, Ireland is indeed expensive re cars (and not only). You could get Golf R32 cheaper in Germany but then here you drive on the “wrong” side of the road and have the steering wheel on the right-hand side (not that is much of an obstacle for some foreigners to get their cars over here). I doubt any politician would aim to change that...
