Went to see the two wind turbines recently installed in Portlaw Co. Waterford on Thursday last. The weather was excellent as you can see, cold and windy but very sunny. Thankfully I decided to bring my camera(s) with me (and had charged up the batteries a few days before). It's impossible to get a sense of scale when you get relatively close to them, they almost seem to shrink the closer you get. We didnt venture past the locked gates but I imagine standing beside them would let you realise how big they actually are. Its a pity I didnt bring my tripod with me because I would have loved to have seen what they blades looked like with a long exposure. Something to try the next time perhaps.

These really are wondrous machines. We have a number of these where I live, given our low lands and coastal proximity. In fact, the two largest offshore farms are going to be here, off the East Anglian coast, very soon.
We have an inland farm in the small town of Swaffham and you can actually go up to a viewing gallery in the main turbine and the view is amazing !
Great pictures, BTW :o)
Thanks :) Theres so much opposition to turbines in Ireland, but thats nothing new. If we could harness power from negativity, Ireland would light up like a Christmas tree... I'd probably be the brightest bulb though lol
Some pleasing shots. I particularly enjoyed the first one, it had a 2001: A Space Odyssey vibe about it with the the cattle grazing below the monolith-like turbine.
Interesting that you should mention A Space Odyssey, I was just wondering what they would look like if they were painted black. You could justify it by solar power or something.
Great photos!
Thanks Betty :)
I work for the man who owns these hes an electrical contractor (cross electrical ltd.)millionaire by the way!!!! but received sum funding 4r them as well,, he had plans for 2more but could not get planning permission also there was opposition from lord waterford 2shut these down as he thought they were spoiling his view of his estate(curraghamore estate) but it was found in court his reasons were without foundation and a photo he produced had been super impposed 2make it look that way. i was there the days they were been put together and erected it was amazin and my mam was inside it theres a little door at the bottom and steps go all the way up.
I'm very sorry for not replying sooner. I'm really grateful for you taking time to write that message and give me some background to the wind turbines. It was both personal and informative. One of the better comments left here. Thank you very much :)
