Novation Remote Zero SL

Some more of my music goodies came today (my new Dell Inspiron came earlier in the week already). I'm still waiting on a few other bits but soon, just like Captain Planet, I will be able to finally combine them all to make my new music production unit.

I haven't tried out the Remote yet but it feels great, really well built and solid. The faders are just a tiny bit stiff at the moment but I'm sure I'll either get used to them or they'll free out a bit. Can't wait to try the trigger pads, they've got a great feel to them.

"Girls Love Guns"

This post is for Pure Cork Boy, who was worried that my handful of gun related posts would would freak out female readers. I could have easily posted up some horrendous tits n'pistols image like this but I actually have some taste believe it or not. Anyway, the woman in the images is German biathlete Magdalena Neuner. Not only is she very pretty but she's also extremely good at biathlon. Sigh... all those years wasted following Sven Fischer.

I love women in Bavarian garb, its a secret fetish of mine (probably that whole Hitler/Eva Braun thing again) If only Willie O'Dea looked as good as this in a skirt, he'd have one thing going for him then.

More (hi-res) images [here] if youre interested.

Rožnov the Timelapse

Make a movie with a Canon EOS 350D? Surely not! Well thats what this mad bunch of Czech's are attempting to do. I mentioned this in an earlier post but it deserves one of its own really.

I mentioned, when posting my own timelapse videos, that I might try some time lapse videos using my Canon EOS 10D, but I never got around to it. Well there are other people out there at it already anyway. "Rožnov the Timelapse" is a concept movie by Ondřej Zeman and Marek Svoboda. They are progressively putting together timelapse segments showing off elements of their hometown in the Czech Republic. They hope to compile enough for a feature length movie.

The scenery is beautiful but the quality is stunning, I mean really really stunning! The resolution is so large (1080p HDTV) that to call it a mere video is an injustice, its more like living-photographs. Heres a frame from the video in the iframe below (click the hyperlink to view the image), or alternatively here.

Now imagine that in motion picture (well almost)! I urge all photographers/lay persons to check it out! You can download it at their download section. It's "trailer 3". There are various resolutions to choose from.

The poor actuator in the Canon is destined to explode one of these days, its already gone through over 100k actuations! A little more about the equipment they're using:

Camera:
Canon EOS 350D

Lens:
EF-S 18-55 mm II (the kitlens), Canon EF-S 10-22 mm, Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro, Peleng 8mm fisheye, MC Zenitar 16mm fisheye

Filters:
B+W Circular Polarizer, various gradual filters from Cokin (P121S, P121M, P121 G2, Tobacco T2), ND8

Misc:
Velbon tripod, Unomat tripod, wired shutter, filter holders

Life Lessons: An Interview With Me

I like reading the "Life Lessons..." mini interviews at the back of the RTE Guide every week, even if I don't know the person I still enjoy reading how they answered the questions. It's really just a glorified 20 Question e-mail circular that you get every now and again (although I havn't got one in years):

I decided I'd answer the questions myself here, just cos I have nothing better to do. You can also read Eleanor McEvoy's answers by clicking on the picture to the left if you get bored of mine :)

What is the best piece of advice you ever got?

I thought about this question a lot and all I can come up with are examples of bad advise I got. So perhaps its one of my own: "Ignore advice"

What is your greatest fear?

Failure.

What is your most treasured possession?

Tough one to answer because I'm not big on the materialism... Probably something like my computer because of its so integrated with my life, hobbies and general activities.

Which living person or persons do you admire the most?

Anyone who ignores the pursuit of money. Poeple who love what they do and not the money they make. People like Monica Loughman who have really dedicated themselves to what they love. That said, I also think Michael O'Leary is great, so go figure! I admire musicians in general, particularly Jon Lord and Chick Corea, with the occasional flute solo from Ian Anderson and some scat singing in Kobaian by Christian Vander.

If hell is other people, what is heaven?

By default, it must be solitude. Both can be either though.

Can money buy you love?

The interesting thing is how the two are related: both that make you immensely happy as well as driving you to despair. If love is an internal emotion then certainly money can give you that, if love is loyalty, then no it cant, nothing can.

What would you rate as your greatest achievement to date?

Being alive.

When was the last time you cried?

I can get all teary eyed and sniffly very easily, usually over music or a film but I can't remember the last time I was really going hammer and tongs with the bawling. Probably wasn't all that long ago though.

Who or what has had the greatest influence on you?

My DNA mainly, but also my family, my past relationships, music, science... I'm easily influenced really, I'm rather open minded and can see both sides of the coin, but I have my own ideas on things too.

What do you like most about your physical appearance?

Ignoring vanity, I like to think that I have a non threatening demeanor that leaves people feeling comfortable around me.

What is your most precious memory?

Every moment is a precious memory.

Who is the greatest love of your life?

Not sure, yet :)

Could you live without music?

If music was banned in the morning, I'd take great satisfaction in breaking the law.

What is your greatest regret?

Being a recovering conservative in reality, I could say I regret a lot in my life, as do many, but it's easy to forget how much a person changes over their lifetime. What's easy for one to do now may have been impossible for that person back then, be it due to character or personality. Sometimes its as simple as not wanting it then but yearning for it now. So I tend not to regret much, but I do wish I went to England, not because it would have made everything better but simply because it was the right thing to do and it was something I could have easily done. And yes there is a back story to that and no I wont go into it :)

What is the craziest thing that you ever did?

Crazy things are usually illegal so I wont be telling you about those ones (cycling on the footpath! :) I am suddenly reminded of one time when I drove around at 2AM on a Saturday night with all the windows down, blaring out Beethovens 9th Symphony to all the bouncers and night rebellers in earshot. I did have a friend with me at the time so it wasnt like I was a complete maniac :)

Does reality TV matter?

Everything matters, the sad fact is, if Jade Goody ceased to exist the universe would collapse.

Is death the end?

I have complete faith that death is the end of existence as we know it. Whether we are scattered into oblivion or reborn as spectral beings, I am positive that the life we lived becomes unimportant. Ego and experience are stripped from us when we die and we are left naked to the universe. If that then means that we are no more or if it means something else, I'm not that bothered either way. For people afraid of death and non-existence I often say: being dead will be no different than being preconceived; it didn't bother you before you existed and you wont be bothered by it again. For those thinking that memories must continue on forever, think "Alzheimer's" or simpler still, just go out on the lash some night and wake up the next morning. Its very easy to forget.

What philosophy do you live by?

Remember that we are all more alike than different. Nobody is better than anyone else. No matter how famous you think you are, or how brilliant you think you are, we all die the same. But likewise, nobody should feel bad about themselves for the same reason. The universe is greater than all of us but we are all still part of it.

Everyone has an inner monologue that no one else hears and everyone got their own little problems. We all just need to get on with each other while we hurtle through space on a wobbling sphere.

Inexplained Mysteries: Famous Jon

I found this while randomly searching around stage6.com, the superior DivX version of youtube(if you question the quality, just look at this jaw dropping HDTV time lapse example). I sat and watched this video without prejudice and I have to say I loved it. I think it was only made in one day by some film student in Bristol and ignoring its short-commings I found it very enjoyable, just don't expect Brass Eye.

The makers blog was here at spirojunk.net but at the time off writing its gone offline :(

Rocks On The Road

Traveling along the Cork-Dublin road today, my car was constantly being assaulted by flying debris. The worst came rolling at me though. Going up the hill just at Caherdrinny (in the 80kph zone) a boulder rolled right across the road and in between my front and rear wheels. All I thought when I saw it was "ooh this is gonna be expensive", but amazingly it just rolled right under me as I drove on. That place is a death trap anyway. Today was the worst I've the road seen it in a long time.

Spare a thought for this person though, someone stole their parking space.

Rambo IV, an 1890 Christian's Perspective

RamboIV2008WPXviD-THS.jpg I can't wait for "John Rambo" to hit the screens here next month. I'm going to have to find someone to drag along to see it with me. It promises to be one of the greatest cinema trips I've ever made. I was going to post the trailer that everyones seen already but after watching a little Christian ditty titled "The Time Changer*" I decided a much better way to show off "John Rambo's" goodness. The clip is pure gold and you could use it for so many other films, but Rambo gets first blood, as it were:

* Ironically if any film were to be censored it should be the Time Changer. A preacher from 1890 is sent forward in time (by means of an invented time machine) to 2002. He is sent to see how bad things have gotten because morals are no longer connected to the word of Jesus. He is disgusted by the way black people are no longer slaves and can walk freely around, and how women now play a greater part in society and have the right to vote. He quickly packs up his bible and high-tails it back to the 19th Century proclaiming that the world of the 21st Century will burn in the fires of hell.

Lizzie Grimaldi Weight Gain Diary

Pounds2Bfor2Bpounds2B4.jpg Former ballerina, Lizzie Grimaldi, is a life long sufferer chronic anorexia. In an attempt to raise money for the Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted as well as possiblity of saving her own life, she has begun a sponsored weight gain diet and keeps an online diary of her progress at the blog pounds4pounds.blogspot.com. Her blog hasn't been updated in a few days now though.

"Having established a three-meals-per-day routine, Lizzie is now trying to up her food intake at each meal. For breakfast she had two slices of toast with butter and honey ("I'm a total honey monster"), and a small sandwich for lunch. "Lunch has always been a big, big issue, a remnant of dancing days when nobody wanted to feel full for afternoon class. I have a big issue with portion control, too. In that respect those individual cheesecakes you get from the supermarket have been my salvation. See, with those, you cannot cheat.""

I heard her being interviewed on Newstalk some days back and thought it so sad that while some try desperately to keep their weight down, there are those who in danger of dying because they are unable to keep their weight up to a healthy level.

Cork County Hall

I took this a few years back before the major work started on the restoration of Cork County Hall. I have a colour version I'm going to post later because I'm not sure which version works best. Colour adds to the image but the grey clouds annoy me. I'm happy with how all the angles came together anyway.

God Bless The Internet

I love Google images, you find the best stuff from it. One can find all kinds of things from there, like the homosexual Garda website. So there I was anyway, looking up images of the recent "Woman on Mars" image when I came across this. Both that and the above image were created by a guy calling himself "ClosetMonster" There's a whole gallery of "Masked Women" there for you to enjoy.

Browsing around I found a link for "The Jessica Trance Website", which is where I found the following video:

It's an interesting fetish to say the least, and the guy certainly has put a lot of work into it but I don't think I'll be signing up just yet thanks :) I find myself being reminded of the following image:

Rocky Theme Inspired By Porn Tune?

Sylvester-Stallone---Rocky-III-Phot.jpg As you probably know (or will know now) Sylvester Stallone first appeared on our screens playing "Stud" in a 1970 pornographic feature titled "The Party at Kitty and Stud's" (aka "Italian Stallion"). I was lucky enough to view this gem some time ago and as you can imagine its a pretty poor affair in terms of content and quality, however one thing struck me while watching a particular scene (theres a joke in there somewhere), the music seemed awfully familiar.

Do you remember that montage scene in Rocky(1976), where he's doing all the training and pumping iron and stuff, it had the main Rocky theme as a musical cue. I've included it below to refresh your memory:

Oh mighty stuff isn't it, almost enough to make you leap out your seat, throw on your jogging gear and then gently sit back down again. Anyway, we're all familiar with the music now, the triumphant stabbing brass opening notes, the brass horns that line the music throughout its 1970's funkadelia...

I now present for your viewing pleasure the afore mentioned scene from "The Party at Kitty and Stud's". Don't worry theres nothing too salacious on show, just some trippy mirror-massage from Stallone. Pay attention to the music though, and note the overall muscle-flexing theme going on:

Even the most cynical cold-hearted bastard (you know who you are) has to admit theres a lot of similarity there. So was it pure coincidence(this was the 70's after all and neither song's all that original), or did Bill Conti create one of the best motion picture in-jokes ever while scoring Rocky? He received an Oscar nomination for his troubles either way.

Next week I will be discussing how Giorgio Moroder became addicted to watching aerobic exercise videos while he was scoring Flashdance.

Highway Star - VIRTUAL PURPLE

Do you know DrumGuy1988? Probably not but do you remember that Deep Purple youtube collaboration I posted a while back? He and another guy called Paploo were involved in that. Well I just got news from the man himself, that they along with with a new dude (from Japan no less!) have made another video together, under the name "Virtual Purple". A truly international group! The song is Highway Star.

The sound quality's a bit poor, the mix is too muddy, and its lacking a vocal track but its still a fantastic effort! Its a fine example of linear overdubbing, its like a kind of youtube ping-pong recording. I especially love the overdubbing used in the keyboard and guitar solo's. I think its excellent anyway! :)

I wonder if you could co-write a song over youtube, from just jamming along I mean. A bit like those photoshop tennis contests. The quality of youtube might not lend itself to such a venture but sending mp3's back and forth might work. Interesting.

3rd Time Unlucky

After much gnashing of credit cards over the last week, I am still looking for a new primary keyboard. It's like that scene from Willy Wonka when all the golden tickets have been found, the last of the Fusions have been sold from Turnkey. Its a pity, I was really getting excited about owning a 88 key fully weighted keyboard for once.

Never fear, I have a cunning plan. It's something I should have thought about in the first place. Why buy a workstation keyboard, when I can build my own! It makes sense really since I'm pretty much a Reason only man. So I'm thinking of getting a new cheap Dell around 400 bucks, dedicating it to music stuff only, and attaching a big midi controller keyboard to it. Heck I might even get a touchscreen monitor for it. There we go, a home-made Korg Oasys. Thats the plan anyway, thoughts welcome.

I've been reading the "IDIOT TOYS" blog for a while now and the pictures just keep getting better and better. By and large the posts make a skit of the poses and scenarios set up in advertising photography, but theres also the odd post as "interesting" as the one above. Oh and lots of picture-posts of odd and unusual batteries too :)

Sign Symbian Apps - Easy Step-by-step

Signing apps for my mobile is a pain in the arse. I havent tried it yet but the whole thing annoys me. Its a Jeremy Clarkson kind of thing: "If I want to install a phone eating virus on my mobile then thats what I'm going to do. I know better than you!".

I thought that Nokia had removed the ability to register at Symbian Signed a few months back but it looks like I was wrong. I think I might finally give signing a go, after I spotted this great step by step walk through linked on the Series Sixty blog. :)

Polish Text-To-Speech

I came across this excellent polish text to speech website recently, called Ivona Text-to-speech. Theres also an English speaking voice to try out. Its provides very realistic pronunciations of polish words and phrases which would be useful to those learning to speak Polish. The English speaking voice is also very good but the online AT&T Labs text-to-speech facility provides greater variety.

I should have expected it really...

After putting an order in with Turnkey for an Alesis Fusion 6HD I get told today (and not for the first time) that the item I ordered has been discontinued and their old stock is depleted...

Arent the flowers beautiful today...

I think perhaps its best if I just spent all my money on a big bag of coke, and played musical tunes on my flute. If anyone wants me I'll be over there, counting my pennies seeing if I can afford to buy this one.

Multiple Profiles In FireFox

I have lots of gmail accounts, and because of how Google ties their services to gmail it means I'm constantly logging into multiple accounts to get things done. At home this is ok becuase I just use a different client for each account, but at work I don't want to install a load of browers to get a few things done.

Bill provided the above video on setting up quick access to FireFox's ability to handle multiple profiles. I'm not sure if this is still the best way to do it, but it works perfectly and is easy to follow. I owe him thanks now, after initially poo-pooing the idea :)

Here is the text you need:

The two commands typed in the CMD window are:
set MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1
"c:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager

The batch file contents (3 lines):
@echo off
set MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p "Second"

Nailshrooms

I spotted three nails embeded in a fence post last week and thought they looked uncannily like three long stemmed fungi. Like the shot of the Western Road, this was taken with my Nokia N73 but I think the quality is fantastic this time around. The only alteration I made to the original was some cropping and a tiny change to the levels.

Along Western Road

I took this on Saturday afternoon last out the passenger window, while the driver waited for the lights to change. I thought the colours and shapes looked nice so I quickly snapped it with my phone. Its turns out it was a nice scene after all, just the quality isnt the greatest. Its just a pity I can't fit my 10D in my pocket like I can with my phone :)

I've included a Google map of the both the camera position and a rough field of view.

The Wrost Worst Phishing Attempt I've Seen

Donncha wrote of a decent AIB phishing attempt this morning. It reminded me of an email I received twelve days ago from "operatorsdata@gmail.com" claiming that I needed to confirm my gmail account details. I wasn't even given the honor of a decent attempt at fooling me:

I admit the really official plain-text look of it had me worried, I mean, Google would never use branding or forms, thats for n00bs. "Date of Bith" was an easy mistake to make too, even for Google. I really shit my pants though when I saw those three exclamation marks after "Warning", because thats exactly the way Google would write it!!!

Warner Home Video (circa 1984)

I have a super treasure for you this time. A Warner Home Video dealer promotion cassette dated circa 1984*. It's survived quite well and provides 10+ minutes of nostalgic viewing of what was available in video stores back in the early '80s.

The titles included are: Red Dawn, Go Tell The Spartans, Operation Daybreak, The Beast Within, It Lives Again, Dracula AD 1972, Satanic Rites Of Dracula, Hound Of The Baskervilles, When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth, Let It Be, 200 Motels and Let There Be Rock.

Scroll through the iframe to see thumbnails of the video

*Although there are titles from as early as 1959 included in the video, I'm basing the date on when Red Dawn was released on LaserDisc in 1984 [imdb]

Hitler for Broadband

Ich Liebe das Internets*

Broadband in Ireland is appalling, even if you think you've got a good connection you're still probably getting ripped off. The current government isn't doing anything about it, they'll probably throw a tribunal at it in a few years though. Does the opposition have a better clue on how to roll out things? Not a chance, Mulley's dead right, Fine Gaels broadband plan is pure shite. Theres no one in the current Dail that can fix things, that's why we need Hitler.

What Hitler did for the roads in Germany he could do for broadband in Ireland (and lets be honest, we need him for the roads here too). He could cut through all the bollocks and just give the orders to lay down the needed data communication fat-pipes. If we were lucky, he might take Eircom out the back and shoot them dead as a bonus.

*Interestingly, when I was using Googles Language tools to get the correct tense for "the internet" in German, it wouldn't translate "I love the internet" into German, it just left it in English. It did translate "I love the Internets" though, which is what I actually wanted, and translated every other kind of stemmed version of the line. Easter egg?

Extended Album Art

I saw this on WFMU blog a few days back. Some creative folks have extended classic album art to make them a little more interesting. There are more here but the best ones are near the start.

Yet Another Bus Crash

This is getting ridiculous. Am I gone mad in the head or is the level of bus related accidents in Ireland disproportionally high? They just keep adding up.

Alesis Fusion 6HD

I think Failed Muso is trying his best to make me buy a 6HD keyboard because he's put up two Fusion related posts just now. Before Christmas I told my tail of woe over not being able to buy a Yamaha MO6 because they were discontinued. I had my heart set on one but Mr. Muso tempted me with talk of a 6HD. I admit, certain features did excite me but the Yamaha look and sound took my fancy.

Anyway, Failed Muso posted about FM synthasis (something which the 6HD has) and he included a great video on understanding the principals of FM programming, by Sonic State.

I love FM sounds, but not from the early days of digital keyboards. My love came from the early days of modern PC gaming (if that makes sense) where the Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16 was the card to have. Back then, games were full of FM synthetic goodness. If I had a spare PCI in the 'puter I'd buy a crappy 16 bit FM card just for the memories.

His other post includes a version of Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygen IV arranged and sequenced entirely on a stock Alesis Fusion. While initially its hard to get used to the non-original timbres being used, once the piece gets going it does sound quite polished.

Its all so tempting but ah, I need a deal breaker: in walks turnkey.co.uk. They have finally dropped the price of the Fusion 6HD to GB£399 (€570), which to be fair, Failed Muso did prophecise. I'm sold! If I'm to buy a keyboard to replace my ancient AX-7* then the 6HD will be it. Unfortunately I'm not that focused on materialism at the moment, so thats the next thing for you to work on Failed Muso :)

* It looks as if my post on my Technics AX-7 keyboard is the most popular search result in google for related search terms. I'm so mad at myself for loosing the manuals belonging to it, I could be the official AX-7 internet resource by now if I had them to put online lol

Jon Lord - Durham Concerto

When I heard that Jon Lord was releasing a new album, a new single classical work, I was absolutely delighted. It has been so long since we were treated to a entire album dedicated to a single work by Lord. As wonderful as Pictured Within and Beyond the Notes were, they lacked the continuity that a grand piece brings.

Durham Concerto is, as it is named, a "concerto", but not in the classical sense. This is more of a loose baroque structured arrangement (as Lord is most fond of) pitting a small group of instruments against the rest of the orchestra. Theres no single solo instrument throughout, instead we are treated to five unique tembres through the piece. They are made up of a cello, violin, Northumbrian Pipes and Hammond Organ. The northumbrian pipes are a distinct sounding type of bagpipe, which ended up reminding me a bit of their use on several of Stings albums (no surprise really as its Kathryn Tickell who performs on both). The Hammond Organ is used sparingly and apart from the tiniest amount of blues thrown in for excitement in the first movement, it blends perfectly in with the rest of orchestra.

The work is divided up into three main movements which reflect the morning, the afternoon and evening of a day at Durham. Each of these is then again divided in two. Lord describes all six parts as "pictures" of the Durham day.

This is a beautiful, sweeping, romantic score, quite unlike anything Lord has done before. He has truly mastered the art of orchestration and the whole album moves along within a wave of concord. We find within the phrases, a fine blend of both old and new Lord stylings wrapped up in this new mature musical mantle. Old world gothic motifs of the Sarabande variety are washed with the newer fun and bouncy schizo that Lord has become fond of in recent years. Lord's distinctive choice of emotional chord progressions and key changes mean that this piece already sounds familiar even though I am hearing it for the first time. The concerto is 56 minutes long but it moves along so easily its hard to believe its that long.

Its hard to say if this is an ideal starting place for new listeners of Lords work, because all his albums are so different. Certainly lovers of modern classical will enjoy themselves but fans of just Sarabande or Deep Purple may have a tougher time getting into things. Time will tell where it sits in relation to the rest of his work but for me this is as impressive as anything that he has done before if not, then perhaps more so. The Durham Concerto is a truly beautiful work of music.

Performed by:

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Mischa Damev (conductor), Matthew Barley (cello), Jon Lord (Hammond organ), Ruth Palmer (violin), Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian pipes)

[For audio excerpts visit the official Jon Lord blog]

[To buy visit amazon or play.com]

On a final and personal note, I hope this album does to my character what Pictured Within did 10 years ago; I am badly in need of some stirring. Music to me is not merely a sound, its an emotion; perceived by the ears and processed by the mind, but interrupted by the soul.
