Chris, The Burgh, has been showing up in the medias recently. Late last year he got a
small bit of coverage over possibility of him performing in Iran. Once again in 2008, this possible Iranian performance is getting him some attention. His music is said to be quite popular there. Fair fucks to him you might say, but whats the big deal? Well people wonder if his songs lyrical content would be suitable to be performed in Iran.
Lets look at what type of country Iran is. Well its an Islamic state. Their constitutional laws revolve around the Islamic law of Sharia. Basically, the place is full of Muslims who aren't known to take criticism kindly.
Music gets my message acrossNow, lets have a look at the music of Chris de Burgh. Yes yes, some nice little ballads, like Lady in Red and a Spaceman Came Traveling. A few upbeat tunes like Don't Pay the Ferry Man and High on Emotion. I could see a few Iranians getting upset at the scenario painted in Lady in Red, but nothing 9/11 like. Hang on a second, whats this: a 1979 album by de Burgh called "Crusader"? I wonder what that could be about!
Yes that is actually de Burgh in the crusader helmet, it gets worse though...Cursader... I actually like this album. It seems to be de Burgh giving the "
Alan Parson's Project" style a lash. Nothing too
prog'y mind you (this is Chris de Burgh for christs sake), but the songs have that kind of epic feel with with sturdy drumming, strummy guitars, floaty vocals, whirly synths, and lots of dynamics. Anyway the title song is what I'm interested in. "Crusader" is probably the closest de Burgh has ever come to recording a prog-rock tune. Here's the music video. Give it a listen, and check out those lyrics:
I love that 7/8 polyrhythm 5 minutes in...A synopsised version of the lyrics:Whats happened, Chris? "The king of heathen Saracen has seized the holy cross."
Whats a Saracen, Chris? "some bedeviled eastern heathen"
[
Saracen: all those who professed the religion of Islam]
Which Saracen? "saladin, the king of the saracens"
[
Saladin is a hero of Muslims worldwide. He is seen as a generous and chivalrous military leader. The Eagle Of Saladin appears on both the Egyptian and Iraqi coat of arms. A large monument of Saladin is erected in Damascus, Syria. When Saladin died, his there was not enough money in his treasury to pay for his funeral as he had given most of it away to charity]
Well, what do Muslims do, Chris? "Whoring and drinking and snoring and stinking"
So, What shall we do with the Muslims? "we must put them to the sword"
Crusader would be a great encore song for a concert in Iran. It would bring the house down, literally!
Allahu Akbar!
[EDIT] When you're good, you're fucking good! After looking up Crusader on wikipedia I see that the band members on the album came from The Alan Parsons Project. You can all go suck my balls, my ears are worth millions!
