Exile: The Best Game I Never Played

I was reading Donncha's post about Xenon 2 when it got me thinking about the games I used to have for my Amiga. Then I remembered the game I never ending up getting but regarded as one of the greatest ever made.

I had a demo of it from a coverdisk (AmigaPower Magazine most likely) and I played it over and over. There was something just magical about it. The gameplay was great, the mystery of story so intriguing, the robotic ostrich things, the pooping parrots, the intergalactic space monkeys... Check it out its all in the video.

Exile originally came out on the BBC Micro, but it quickly spread to other systems, including the Commodore Amiga. I did get a chance to play the BBC version once but not for very long.

Theres a few options at playing the game nowadays. You can play the original game versions on a PC using an emulator. You can try a few of the conversions like ExileGL. Or new games based on it like Exile: The Nameless Remake, but nothing comes close to playing it on real original hardware.

Albert Hoffman, 1906 - 2008

Albert Hoffmann was a Swiss scientist best known for synthesizing lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). He died of a heart attack yesterday at age 102.

He was an adamant campaigner for the legalisation of LSD and other hallucinogenics, and was convinced of their medicinal value in treating mental illness. He wrote over 100 scientific articles and a number of books. The following is an extract from his essay, "The Message of the Eleusinian Mysteries", which appears in the book "Entheogens and the Future of Religion"...
"...mankind has repeatedly sought paths and evolved methods to evoke deeper perception and experience.... An especially important aid in the induction of mystical-ecstatic states of consciousness, discovered in the earliest times, is decidedly the use of certain plant drugs. In the preceding discussion, I have made it quite clear that their use must proceed within the scope of religious ceremony."

A clip from Spain's got Talent. While we get endless attempts at murdering Whitney Houston numbers, the Spanish get experimental jazz. And there I was thinking all the Spanish had was the sun.

Unrelated but associated to it on youtube, is this video of some Spanish Emo kids. Call me a big xenophobe but it seems weird for there to be a Spanish Emo scene, and in a Spanish Starbucks!? Hell, I'm still not used to there even being an Irish Starbucks!

JUSTICE -

I'll be frank, this album was a huge disappointment. I bought it soon after I previewed a few of the tracks from it. I thought it would be like an edgier, glitchier Daft Punk affair. Edgier must obviously mean horrible production. Its all mids and highs with no bass. Take the second track, "Let There Be Light". Theres a bass part alright, but no bass fidelity in it. Even after heavy eq'ing, it still sounds completely hollow. Everyone has their own taste when it comes to eq, but I don't expect to be part of the production team after I buy an album!

The third track, "D.A.N.C.E."", is still fun but they should have renamed it "C.O.M.P.R.E.S.S.I.O.N". The whole album is overly compressed. Everything is fighting to gain your attention, the end result is a ear fatiguing limp soundscape. Look-ahead limiting should be banned. When done wrong, it sucks the life out of music. Its quite distracting on this album at times.

The image above shows the difference in compression levels between Justice's D.A.N.C.E. waveform and Daft Punk's Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger waveform. The Justice waveform is on the bottom if you hadn't already guessed. Even Daft Punk's more heavily compressed album Human After all has more life to it than .

I think the biggest disappointment with the album is that the songs themselves are actually quality. DANCE and DVNO are great tunes. Genisis is an epic opening, or at least it would have been If only the production had some balls. I question the arrangement on that one too. I guess this is the sound the kids like these days.

Terra Landcraft

I came across this Flash based terrain generator a while back. Theres lots of bits to fiddle around with, including the terrain colouring, fog and water levels. You can also draw your your own height maps. Thats about it.

Will Chris De Burgh Perform "Crusader" in Iran?

Chris, The Burgh, has been showing up in the medias recently. Late last year he got a small bit of coverage over possibility of him performing in Iran. Once again in 2008, this possible Iranian performance is getting him some attention. His music is said to be quite popular there. Fair fucks to him you might say, but whats the big deal? Well people wonder if his songs lyrical content would be suitable to be performed in Iran.

Lets look at what type of country Iran is. Well its an Islamic state. Their constitutional laws revolve around the Islamic law of Sharia. Basically, the place is full of Muslims who aren't known to take criticism kindly.

Music gets my message across

Now, lets have a look at the music of Chris de Burgh. Yes yes, some nice little ballads, like Lady in Red and a Spaceman Came Traveling. A few upbeat tunes like Don't Pay the Ferry Man and High on Emotion. I could see a few Iranians getting upset at the scenario painted in Lady in Red, but nothing 9/11 like. Hang on a second, whats this: a 1979 album by de Burgh called "Crusader"? I wonder what that could be about!

Yes that is actually de Burgh in the crusader helmet, it gets worse though...

Cursader... I actually like this album. It seems to be de Burgh giving the "Alan Parson's Project" style a lash. Nothing too prog'y mind you (this is Chris de Burgh for christs sake), but the songs have that kind of epic feel with with sturdy drumming, strummy guitars, floaty vocals, whirly synths, and lots of dynamics. Anyway the title song is what I'm interested in. "Crusader" is probably the closest de Burgh has ever come to recording a prog-rock tune. Here's the music video. Give it a listen, and check out those lyrics:

I love that 7/8 polyrhythm 5 minutes in...

A synopsised version of the lyrics:
Whats happened, Chris? "The king of heathen Saracen has seized the holy cross."

Whats a Saracen, Chris? "some bedeviled eastern heathen"
[Saracen: all those who professed the religion of Islam]

Which Saracen? "saladin, the king of the saracens"
[Saladin is a hero of Muslims worldwide. He is seen as a generous and chivalrous military leader. The Eagle Of Saladin appears on both the Egyptian and Iraqi coat of arms. A large monument of Saladin is erected in Damascus, Syria. When Saladin died, his there was not enough money in his treasury to pay for his funeral as he had given most of it away to charity]

Well, what do Muslims do, Chris? "Whoring and drinking and snoring and stinking"

So, What shall we do with the Muslims? "we must put them to the sword"

Crusader would be a great encore song for a concert in Iran. It would bring the house down, literally! Allahu Akbar!

[EDIT] When you're good, you're fucking good! After looking up Crusader on wikipedia I see that the band members on the album came from The Alan Parsons Project. You can all go suck my balls, my ears are worth millions!

Bandwidth Theft, Make Hot-linkers Look Bad

So there I was, searching google images for pictures of Serena Williams. I knew that I had a highly ranked picture of her because of all the hits I used get from it. Sure enough, it was there high up the list on the first result page. That struck me as strange though because as of last month I noticed a sudden drop off in inbound hits from in. I decided to click on the image and see what was up. Low and behold, it was the image from my photobucket account alright, but someone else had just hotlinked to it. The image above is a screen grab from their blog. The last image is the one hotlinked from here. I wont post a link to it but you can easily find it yourself if you search for Serena Williams.

Now, I don't care that they stole the image off me. Heck I stole it from somewhere else myself. I wouldn't even mind so much if they hotlinked to it but gave a backlink for my troubles, but they did neither, and they managed to steal my page rank! I decided to do something, not so much out of annoyance but simply for the lulz. So what did I do? Change the picture for a big mans penis? Nah too obvious. I instead went for something even worse...

I made the fucker look racist!

Girl Puts DMT Up Her Bum

Entheogens! Krystal Cole talks about the time she took DMT anally. Good shit, man! And other such drug/bottom orientated puns. Some will say she's full of shit, but thats only half of it!

A short bio of Krystle from a review of one of her books Lysergic.
"Krystle Cole, a small-town Kansas girl looking for a way out of her stultifying midwestern misery. While working as an exotic dancer to pay the tuition bills, she meets Gordon Todd Wilson -- a mysterious older man with a suitcase full of psychedelic drugs -- who picks her up, doses her with MDMA, and invites her to live with him in an abandonded missle silo. Little did Krystle know that the mysterious Todd was actually an LSD chemist and DEA informant, and that she was sitting on top of what has come to be known as one of the the largest LSD busts in history."

DMT is a Schedule I Drug in the USA, along with cannabis and a selection of other hallucinogenics. Being caught in possession of a Schedule I drug carries a mandatory life sentence. Cocaine and Methamphetamine belong to the less severe Schedule II list of controlled substances. The sale of firearms in the USA is practically uncontrolled and hand guns can be bought without ID. Make of that what you will.

As you'd expect, DMT is also illegal in Ireland as well as throughout Europe. It is however completely legal for a person of age 18 and above to purchase and consume alcohol in Ireland. 50% of all violent crime, including murder, is carried out while under the influence of alcohol. 39% of Irish road deaths are caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol. The sale of Magic Mushrooms (mushrooms which contain the psychoactive molecule psilocybin) was instantaneously outlawed in Ireland in 2006 by Minister for Health, Mary Harney, after the single death of an individual who consumed a portion of Magic Mushrooms, shortly after consuming a toxic level of alcohol.

Whether it's illegallity is just or not, it should be noted that DMT is naturally manufactured in the human brain, and is hypothesised to be the chief reason for the existance of dreaming, the ego and ones sense of self. The body is so well equipped at handling DMT that it is metabolised within minutes of it entering the blood stream.

Massive Improvement In 3's Mobile Services

It's just over a year since I switched to "3" as my mobile phone service provider. Since then they've really come on a lot. Up until recently, I was unable to connect to the internet. The reason being that I hadn't "verified my age". I went into the fucking 3 shop in Cork with my driving licence twice, each time they telling me it would all be nice and dandy the following day. Well it never was. I gave up on getting the internets on my phone and instead tried to comfort myself in the fact that I could send picture messages for 5c. Then a few months back out of boredom I see in the "My 3" page of the online 3 Zone thingie that I had an option to surf the net on this phone. I couldn't believe it. After I clicked the button I was surfing on my phone that same day.

Other things were also improved. You can manually set your phone type (till now 3 thought I had a Nokia e61 and as such said nothing was compatible when I tried downloading apps). You can access your 3 account from a pc now. Free Skype calls. They've lifted the restriction on using your phone as an 3g modem so I can surf away on my laptop using my phone. In fact, I'm posting this on my laptop using my phones 3G connection right now. I still can't get MSN to work though (bad application cert or something) and I'm not sure I like their new price of the N73 €179 verses the €400 I spent last year. Ah well, its working on all cylinders now though.

Hmmm... "this web page is restricted"? If youre getting that a lot when you surf to "legitimate" pages (calling your movie blog Karl Hungus was a right laugh in the beginning but it means youre blacklisted now). No problem though, just get yourself a nice proxy to run your browser through. If youre just surfing on your phone, simply use Opera Mini, it uses its own dedicated proxy to deliver web pages. Now... onto bangbros.com!

My First Interactions With Reason 1.0

Wrist by Josh

These are the first recordings I made using a demo of Reason 1.0 back in 2000/2001. I messed around with Reason while bored at work. I had no keyboard so I made extensive use of Matrix modules (and the "random pattern" feature) along with pitch wheels on the Subtractor synth. There was no way to save or bounce a mix with the demo so I used Windows Recorder to record while I dickied about live. Oh and what made it even more fun; everything had to be done in 15 minutes because after that Reason would shut down and you'd have to start over again.

The sad thing is, 8 years on and I wouldn't be surprised if people thought these were my best efforts lol

The chances are, you the reader will at most only listen to five seconds of one (if any at all) so I'm putting number five first as the best one on show. Its a bubbly trippy trancey ambienty thing (stick on enough genres and people might end up agreeing with something).
This is second best (best being a loose musical term).
Love that syncopated ReDrum programming lol
Always reminded me of a priest giving a sermon at a rave.
Ironically, I started off using Reason in a completely live setting. Everything was triggered and manipulated in real time. The thought of doing anything live like that now doesn't exist in my mind. Ableton Live scares the pants off me!

[edit] Hmmm... not sure what I actually meant there. I guess by "live", I mean recording audio without recording the associated midi instructions i.e. "all or nothing" takes.

Cork Nights - Demo

I decided I'd make public the original demo for Cork Nights. It went through so many iterations that some may like to hear what it began like. I can't remember in what order I recorded the tracks to this. I think it was just the backing piano and melody on the first night and then bass and drums the following day.

Bare in mind this is very very rough, and was only meant as a sketch to keep the ideas in my head, so it doesn't sound very pretty. It holds together fairly well to begin with, but then it all goes badly out of sync.

I had always planned to put a piano part in the final version but it never got done.

To keep with the idea of this being a "sketch", I took Donncha's original photo and messed about with it. I shifted the hue map, added a brush stroke layer and carved away at this till I got a type of painting look I wanted. I hope he doesn't mind :)

Chick Corea & Béla Fleck - The Enchantment

Yeehaw! Chick Corea and Béla Fleck throw a banjo and a piano into a blender and produce a concord jazzgrass smoothie. It's hard for an average music listener to remove themselves from the concept that the banjo is just a folk and country instrument, but make no mistake, Luke Kelly this is not! It's a fine blend between jazz and country, with jazz actually taking the reins most of the time. I'm not sure why this album is being classed as unique or revolutionary though. It might be different for Corea but Fleck is well used to playing with other jazz musicians.

Writing credits are divided between the two and the interlaced track listing reflects to this. The opening track, "Senorita", is by Corea and uses a motif highly remeniscient of his La Fiesta theme. Track 2, "Spectacle" goes to Fleck. A lively and fluttery piece, the banjo bubbling away but without it venturing into bluegrass.

Click to play video [opens new window]

Corea does however get all country on track 4, "Mountain". He lays down a piano bluegrass groove you could marry your cousin to. This is certainly new territory for the Jazz virtuoso. They both talk about this track as well as the album in general on the "Behind the scenes" video hosted on chickcorea.com.

The album is certainly worth owning. I doubt I'll take it off the shelf as much as Corea's other stuff, but its a worthy and refreshing take on things and certainly "good" in all senses of the word!

Photography of Michael MacSweeney

Cork photographer Michael MacSweeney's got some fantastic stuff on his website [macsweeney.org]. His online gallery contains mainly people but theres a fabulous diversity amongst them. Ranges from actors to sailers and from jazz musicians to ballerinas.

I took note of his work after spotting this photo he took of Monica Loughman.

In the gutter, with Ted Haggard

Have you ever heard of Ted Haggard? Probably not, because he's not a Scientologist. If he was a Scientologist you'd have had a great laugh about him along with his Buddies Tom Cruise and John Travolta. He is in fact, a former evangelical preacher and leader.

Here is is "talking" to Richard Dawkins. Dawkins isn't afraid to tackle Christians and Muslims, unlike certain other "exploding tomato" hacks, who's only aim in life is to be famous by making Scientologists look silly; a bit like shooting fish in a barrel really. The video proves that Scientologists, if nothing else, are pussy cats compared to evangelical preachers.

A few months later we get this news interview with Haggard....

Then finally we get this statement of admission (read by someone else). Ah sure, god was only testing him, isn't that right? Don't worry though, he says he's now totally "cured" from homosexuality and has returned to being a "normal" hetrosexual.

I think this can all be summed up with a quote from the first video:

Haggard:
"... in fact, your grandchildren might listen to the tape of you saying that and laugh at you..."

Dawkins:
"You want to bet?"

Isn't this the cutest cat ever? I can't remember how I found it (some random google image search I guess) but I had it saved as a favorite.

Three Irish Ballet Companies Unite

I watched with interest, a small segment at the end of RTE's Wednesday's Six One news programming, about the merger of three principal Irish ballet companies, namely: Cork City Ballet, Ballet Ireland and the Irish National Youth Ballet. They are calling the merger Pas De Trois.

All concerned seem happy about the merger and the Irish Examiner declares that "a new lease of life was today injected in to Irish ballet." I do wonder however, if this is a sign of strength or weakness. Alan Foley seemed to be putting on a brave face and comes out with a somewhat cryptic response about the "Irish way".

Its come about because of a "recommendation" from the Arts Council so it does make one wonder if this merger is entirely by choice. Are the three standing proudly alongside each other because of a common goal, or are they huddling together in the icy breeze of poor funding?

The video took me hours to get. RealMedia was always a piece of crap, but it used to be far easier to get and edit stuff from the RTE website before. I guess thats good for copyright control, or something. I branded it extra big because of how long it took :)

Win a Volkswagen Golf... not!

I'm sure you've seen the add, it seems to be in everything paper and magazine. I was always dubious about it because it was a Golf sporting the GTSport livery but without the GTSport badge. Now they're including a previous winner with a picture of the car he won.

... but hang on, thats not the car you said was up to be won.

Ignoring the overall body colouring, its missing a load of the bits from the car advertised. It's gone from a GTSport to bog standard 1.4 Golf. It doesn't even have foglights. Absolute shenanigans!

Another reason to love Michael O'Leary

"The reason the health service is in shit is because we've had no leadership in this country for the last 10 years. Bertie Ahern has been a disaster for the Irish economy for the last 10 years.....The next government is going to have to deal with some really harsh realities."

Republic Of Loose - I like Music

I bloody love this song. It always reminds me of Victor Barry for some reason. I know nothing about the Republic Of Loose, bar the name. I'm not big on song lyrics in general but you have to love the "Can I buy you a burger..." line

[EDIT] Ok I'm officially stunned right now. "Come Back Girl" was by Republic Of Loose!? Holy shit lol I can't believe this wasn't by some black American. I badly need someone to give me an education in Irish bands lol Oh dear, I feel so ashamed :)

Where's my fucking profile picture, Google?

Google's lost my profile picture. No idea why. It's located on photobucket and it was happily being displayed up until today. I went to check my profile settings and I find not only can I not link to the photobucket version but it doesn't like the filename when I try to upload it to blogger. Profayshinal!

[EDIT] It's returned, no more shenanigans please.

Clarkson On Electricity

"Thirty years ago in South Africa, there was white power. Then there was black power. And now there is no power.

No really. There isn't. The electricity-generating company over there has just announced that the power stations are not capable of meeting demand and that there will be outages for two, three or six hours a day for at least the next seven years.

So far as I can see, no one is asking why this has happened. Everyone suspects it's because the power company, since it took over the reins from De Boer Pik Racist, has been operating a policy of only employing black people. So the whites, the ones who know how to run a power station, have left the job of generating electricity to a bunch of guys who don't know how to.

No one's actually saying that of course. It's a political potato so hot that you're going to get your fingers burned if you even whisper such a thing."

Fabulous Christians

Emily@sk is a 18 year old aspiring journalist hailing from western Canada. She's a devote Christian and believes in the fundamentals of Creationism. She also believes that "men are inherently sinful and thus are in need of a savior".

She is sympathetic towards Judaism and hates Islam. She was once quoted as saying,
"I actually think it [Islam] is a horrible religion and normally am not so soft on it".

Her favorite books include the Bible and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. She's a huge fan of the late Charlton Heston and in the following video recites one of his speeches regarding gun control.

She has two blogs although both are currently under hiatus. One is her personal blog and the other, Ask TV, a place for her sister and she to post videos they have made in news report form etc.

She might be a [fabulous] Creationist but she's a lot more tolerant than others (as long as youre not Muslim that is). She once even championed Atheist Nick Gisburne when his youtube account was suspended. Anyway, she seems fairly dedicated to the journalism thing so I wish her all the best with that :)

Brian Cowen, Leader

Heil! Let us celebrate his victory with a fine quote about the man. Hmmm... which shall I choose, ah yes....

"Someone told me the other day that the reason his lips were so thick was that when his mother was bringing him up he was a very disobedient young boy, so she used to put glue on his lips to keep him there and that has been recorded in his physical make-up."

Rev. Ian Paisley 2003

Good old Rev. Paisley. Just remember, he'll be at gods right hand side when he dies. I remember watching him describe Cowens features on the news years back. I've tried a few times to find the footage online but I've never come up with anything. Someone must have a copy somewhere.
