Apparently Gail Trimble, of Corpus Christi Oxford, appeared on University Challenge again last night. I mentioned her in post a while back, when I saw her appear on an earlier episode of University Challenge. On that occasion her appearance gained some negative interest on the internet. It's worse this time however, for example...
"We have been watching this horse-toothed snob for the last number of weeks. she ruins university challenge every time she is on it with her 'better than thou' attitude"As I've mentioned umpteen times before, I don't watch a lot of TV. Very rarely would I sit down and tune into the goggly-box. I do own a modern TV though, with amazing features like an "OFF SWITCH". And I really paid a lot for the delux model with the ability to CHANGE CHANNELS! Seriously, if a program annoys you that much just turn the fucking thing off! Maybe if you spent less time sprawled out in front of the rot-box and more time reading you might not feel so inadequate watching these shows.
[UPDATE 24.02.09] Gail Trimble & Corpus Christi Disqualified For Cheating in Final!
[Gail Trimble Creates Traffic, 22.02.09]
Here, here. So she has a few mannerisms that don't look too good on camera - I suspect she has career intentions other than TV presenting so who cares?! I can only suppose that all the bile comes from a feeling of total inadequacy in the the face of obvious excellence!
ReplyDeleteHey Gamma, I know you're down with the techno whizz, schizz nizz. Is there any way you could convert this into an mp3 for me?
ReplyDeletertsp://od2.rte.ie/2009/0128/28012009rte-morningireland.ra
I need it for a little blog project.
The soonest I could do it is over the weekend, if I have the time. You're better off doing it yourself though as the whole show is over two hours long.
ReplyDeleteDownload the RA file with with FlashGet. Convert this file to a MP3 or WAV file using SUPER or VLC. You can edit this down to size using Audacity and save the output as an mp3. You might need to download the LAME Mp3 codec for this, or you can save it as another open source lossy format. It all depends on what you want to do with it afterwards.
She has an air about her but she is impresive!!! I am on the side of those who find it rather attractive and a welcome change to the bimbo culture that the reality TV curse has spawned!!
ReplyDeleteThe program doesn't annoy people just Trimble. Just accept that shes an annoying bitch!
ReplyDeleteMy TV comes with those features too, but I don't change the channel because I like watching the programme. As much as I dislike Trimble and the fact that she comes across as patronising (she may well be a lovely, modest person though), it isn't enough to make me turn the telly off.
ReplyDeleteI have met Gail and she is incredibly sweet and friendly. I think it's also fair to say that she would never randomly slag off someone on TV that she had never met, because she would consider it very spiteful ...
ReplyDeleteExcellent Rozzie, so that means you can get me an autograph then, right!? :D
ReplyDeletegail trimble for queen or pm i say.
ReplyDeletedamn the begrudgers!
to those people who hate indvidiuals who use their brains: it is because of intelligent people that you have an internal combustion engine to get your sorry backside to work every day (if you do work that is). That computer you have used to post such nasty comments, it didnt appear out of thin air you know.
ReplyDeleteGet a life you lot Any fule kno you can't tell anything about a person from just watching them answer a few questions - other than the fact that she is smart! Hear her on Woman's Hour today? Innocent as charged (shame about the sound quality on her phone line though). DO you have a problem with women being clever? Oh...and by the way, she's a babe on TOAST! Posted by Dogbert (Male)
ReplyDeleteI bet she's proper dirty in the sack.
ReplyDeleteI don't hate this girl, but it was sickening when they won right at the death, it was like watching United win the Champions League, just the overwhelming sense of injustice, that smuggery has prevailed once again.

ReplyDeleteI am approaching my 80th birthday and I find Gail captivating. Why is it that we spend so much time telling the world why we are such good losers? As a nation we find success hard to stomach and as soon as anyone rises above the common level we do our best to bring them down, whether they are academics or football managers. Long live the Gail Trimbles of this country, we need them now more than ever before. The bile expressed against her is pure jealousy.
The team captain of Manchester is also dazzlingly bright and ever so slightly irritating - a Gail Trimble male counterpart. Yet he doesn't attract such vitriol! Why? BECAUSE HE'S A MAN!
ReplyDeleteI thought Gail Trimble was electrifyingly brilliant. I thought she was self effacing and charming. She is a breath of fresh air and I wish her all the best . It is good to know there are young people like her in England at the moment. Well done Gail Trimble!
ReplyDeleteEltheza: I was going to say something about that Manchester Captain last night, much along the lines of what you said, as more of a back lash than anything else really, but I felt that if I did that I would only be giving weight to comments people have already made about Trimble. You're right though, the fact that she's a woman is fuel to the hatred fire.
ReplyDeleteYes, Gail Trimble is incredibly clever, and yes, it makes a very pleasant change to see such levels of intelligence on our screens, amidst the Dancing on Ice type rubbish. That is all true. What is also apparent, however, is her ability to make one's skin crawl, with a simple smug hair-toss.
ReplyDeleteIf all UC contestants seemed so conceited, I couldn't bring myself to watch.
Wow there was even some vile comments on here. I have seen this girl but I will have to look her up on YouTube to see if she is as annoying as people say.

Didn't anyone else notice that although Manchester were winning with 5 minutes to go all the questions were then changed to Classics and ancient history (her specialist subject) - it really smacked of collusion and that the whole thing was rigged.
ReplyDeleteLindsay: It's a nervous habit! Why people think its a sign of smugness beggars belief! From my own personal experience in the past; whenever I spoke to someone and I felt a bit shy or awkward about making a statement or answering a question I used to sometimes rub the side of my mouth and scratch my chin. It was an automatic defence mechanism to try and dispel some of the tension of attention being directed towards me, by means of a casual physical action. It got to a point though where it looked like I was giving hand signals to a secret service agent hiding in the bushes.
ReplyDeletealex: wasn't it strange how they also had picture and music rounds in the middle of it... I've never seen that in UC before :)
ReplyDeleteGamma: If you've seriously never seen picture and music rounds in UC before you've obviously never watched an episode all the way through. There's always at least one of each.
ReplyDeleteShe's intelligent, she's pretty, she's enjoying her moment of glory and i think, she'll do really well in her life.
ReplyDeleteRozzie: *sarcasm*
ReplyDeleteGamma: sorry, I'm being dense. I still don't understand what you're saying though - are you suggesting it was obviously rigged or that the questions are always about things like classics and art, or something else entirely?
ReplyDeleteIt seemed like the first half were 'Manchester's questions' and the second half were 'Corpus's questions' - and the psychological impact of Yeo losing Manch five points a few minutes before the end must have been pretty big.
Rozzie: No need to apologise, I wasn't being very clear. I just mean't that having a round specific to a subject isn't unusual.
ReplyDeleteThe 5 point deduction at the end was dramatic all right but I think the lack of answering by the Corpus Christi Team at the start must have been fairly unsettling for them too!
She was interviewed on breakfast TV and seemed like a nice girl. I can see why certain people feel more comfortable watching the usual 'celebrity' trash TV, because the 'celebrities' (kerry katona, jade et al?!) represent the lowest common denominator. This girl is better than that and it makes some realise what they've mised out on by not trying at school/uni and getting on in life etc. Screw you all.
ReplyDeleteI can understand the "smugness" comments, and admittedly, some of Miss Trimble's mannerisms did seem a bit self-congratulatory. But nonetheless, this is a famously difficult quiz show that many students aspire to be on, and to get even one question right is a marvellous achievement. If it were me, I'd be beaming after every question.
ReplyDeleteShe appeared on Breakfast this morning and she seemed very warm and likeable indeed. As a fellow classicist and quizzer, I wish to send my congratulations to her and to her team for such a marvellous achievement and her graceful behaviour in the face of such petty and spiteful criticism. Go Gail!
I thought she was brilliant ,refreshing to see, sick of the crap we normally have to endure, more I say more.
ReplyDeleteTrimble rocks. The fact that she annoys all the thick people makes her rock even more.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - to those people who hate indvidiuals who use their brains: it is because of intelligent people that you have an internal combustion engine to get your sorry backside to work every day (if you do work that is). ReplyDeleteYou want to be careful with statements like that.
If people were invited to take too much notice of exactly who invented those things and just about every other damn thing we rely on...Well it might also become apparent how little others have had to contribute.
You dont want to be accused of racism now do you!
That last comment doesn't make much sense, and also bears little to no relation to the original story..?
ReplyDeleteIf anyone's actually looking for an mp3 of the announcer, there's one available at http://alibaabaa.co.uk/article/352. Using it now for SMS :)
That's weird Tom, just a few hours before your comment I thinking of sampling sections of the dialog from the University Challenge episodes myself.
