The One With Me On The Radio

Well, the one with the blog on the radio anyway. As some may have heard Vic Barry gave the blog a mention on his show when he commented on the April Fools gag I posted involving his departure from RedFM to join the state broadcaster, RTÉ. Just listen to the clip, it's fairly well explained. For those still lost with what I'm rambling on about, I'll give some bullet points below, as well as a notes about the hidden messages in the setup:

Download the mp3 here if there's a problem with the Google Video

The Background to the post:
  • "Cork Talks Back" is a nightly talkshow hosted by Victor Barry on Cork's RedFM

  • A few months back he ran a segment on the show where called 'alleged news' where a fictitious  OTT news story was read out on-air with the word "allegedly" tacked on at the end.

  • I started writing a post at the time in the same "dead-pan" format detailing how Barry was moving to RTE. It never got finished.

  • Months later the item was dropped from the show but Fools Day was coming up so I decided to rework what I had written to fit with it.

  • I never expected anyone to believe it, but I wrote it as if I was wasn't in on the gag (just to get into the swing of Fools Day)

  • Someone contacted Vic about it and he kept the gag running by posting a confirmation post on his own blog.

  • After seeing that post I was expecting some sort of small mention on that nights show, but I never expected for the level of exposure this blog got.

Some Easter Egg's about the setup:
  • If you look closely at the text in the picture you'll read that only the first paragraph relates to the story I wrote, the rest is from the actual real RTE page I used as a template, and it relates to  the man that was killed in a branch of B&Q earlier that week. I had softened the text slightly, not to hide it completely, but just show it wouldn't jump out at you if you glanced at the picture.

  • The fake link I gave to the RTE news website ended with f00l.html (as in "fool" for foolsday)

  • I thought the whole thing might have been ruined when Vic on the previous nights show, extensively joked about how he might be in the running to replace Pat Kenny as host of "The LateLate Show", a famous Friday night talkshow on RTE television. I later saw the peculiarity of this scarily similar topic as good karma for my post.

Thanks again to Vic for being a good sport and giving the place a mention on the show! :-) (btw I was totally mortified when I initially started hearing the post being read out on-air, as I just banged it out and didn't even proof read it heehee)
