If he had been shot dead in the middle of the performance it would have been less upsetting. It's just the way that he was slowly dying and nobody even knew. I'm guessing he was in a lot of pain. Although I'm sure that he would have liked to go to the sound of laughter. Or would he?
I imagine dying to be like fainting, where you drop out from your senses of reality soon into it. Regarding the pain, whatever one's belief about the afterlife, the "crossing over" cleanses all sense of personal history; whether you are reborn in the grace of gods hairy bosom, or lost forever in the eternity of oblivion. One's personal eschaton, the liberator from the discomfort of existence.
Excellent! But not a water bed or one of those magic-hands vibrating beds I hope. I had a bad experience with one of those before. Actually thinking about it, it's probably best you just strap me to a lamppost. Better still, a telephone poll alongside a bus stop. I saw a nice one in Clondalkin. I trust it's still there.
