I came across a nice collection of planes in flight, taken by Polish photographer, jaropincet [flickr]. What's unusual about these photos is that they were taken of planes, flying at cruising altitude (30+km). Becuase of this, there's a lot of athmosphere between the lens and subject which gives a very ethereal quality to the images.

Aeroplanes no longer resemble creatures of flight. They instead, look like they are swimming. Like mechanical manta rays, slicing through celestial soup... or something.

There's no data on the lens focal length in the EXIF data so I'm guessing he used some sort of analogue coupler to a telescope, or similar, to get the nescessary magnification. Excellent stuff!

Hi,
I'm jaropincet and I've just found this article. I'm glad that you like my photos. You are right, I use a telescope Synta '8 and Barlow Lens x2
cheers
Hi jaropincet, thanks for leaving a comment! :) It's an impressive use of long focal lengths, being able to track such fast moving objects.
