This isn't fair of course, because Gates changed the First World as much as, if not more so, than Jobs, we just have short memories. And just because someone didn't get involved with charity doesn't mean they haven't had a huge impact on the world. This isn't a Jobs bashing post (for once) it's more of a pro-Bill post.
It kills Bill Gates, I mean really kills him, that he developed and pushed the tablet device for years, convinced it was the future but was unable to make a success of it, and then Jobs came in with the iPad and made it a hit almost overnight. Watch the D5 conference from 2007. Watch Jobs, when Bill as he says he's convinved tablet computing is going to be a hit, even though it's currently failing. Watch Jobs bite his lip. The sly old bugger.
It's a great conference. You should definitely watch it in full [http://castroller.com/Podcasts/St...]. You can really appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of both men.

IT WAS GOOD WHEN BILL GATE AND STEP JOBS INVENTED THE PC COMPUTERS FOR TO TAKE INTO BUSINESS MEETINGS OR IF YOU WANT TO PLAY GAMES IN AT HOME YOU CAN PLUG AND PLAY THINGS INTO THE MAIN INTERFACE. BUT IT'S NOT JUST THE WORLD WIDE WEB THAT HAS CHANGED THERE IS ALSO A MOVE AWAY FROM PAPER FORMS FOR EXAMPLE FAX MACHINES AND INSTEAD THE USING OF MOUSES AND KEYBOARDS AND WORD PROCESSORS SOMETIMES YOU THINK WHERE WILL IT END IN TWENTY YEARS WILL THERE BE A COMPUTER THAT IS MORE INTELLIGENT THAN A LARGE CHILD
You know what? This is the first time I've heard Steve Jobs speak, I think. Yeah. Seriously!
How things change (and stay the same)
I must say, I quite surprised! And a little impressed, if I'm being honest :)
On a tangential point, I still remember the first time I heard Freddie Mercury speak. MTV were doing a special on Queen shortly after he died. I remember them saying it might be the first time a lot of his fans heard him speak. Thinking about it now, what an odd thing for them to say, but it was true I guess.
I didn't hear him speak until after his death! RTE weren't ones to show Freddie Mercury interviews back then.
Let's see. I have heard Bill Gates, RMS, Linus Torvalds speak. Check, check, check. :)
I first heard Torvalds and Stallman speaking when I watched "Revolution OS" while I was in college years ago. I think I should watch it again, because my opinions have totally changed since then.
I heard Mark Shuttleworth speaking only last week when watching a conference he gave on the 11.10 release of Ubuntu. An interesting character, very surgical.
