I hear far too much optimism about the financial situation with the EU. There isn't enough Doom-Talk. Before Christmas, the EU appeared to be on the brink of collapse, now it's all happy, and fluffy bunnies, and glittery shit.
Let's have a look at some figures. Most people seem to think North Korea is a basket case, but their estimated debt as of January 2012 is a mere $20billion. What's the EU's debt? Figures for 2010 make it €10trillion. Let's put those next to each other in long form, and in US dollars.
North Korea:$20,000,000,000
European Union:$13,000,000,000,000
Now, lets look at the "massive" Paris-Club debt the Soviet Union had when it collapsed, a debt which took oil-rich Russia 15 years to pay back, and compare it with oil-poor Ireland's gross external debt as of 2009:
CCCP:$45,000,000,000
Ireland:$2,287,000,000,000
As you can see, it's all going swimmingly well for us. All figures are from Wikipedia, so they are probably fake and we are not in debt at all! Oh well, that's enough doom talk for now.
