I suspect the hype surrounding the Mayan calendar thing, has slowly wormed itself into people's subconscious minds... OR... The aliens are using their mind control devices, from their Martian headquarters. It's all good eitherway.
Maybe they are trying to disprove the Aztec End of the World theory?
